I am already getting sad to have to leave Rome on Sunday. I found the post office as I have to send yet another box of treasures home. I keep telling myself that I don't need anything but then there it is staring at me saying it's not for you think of your sister, nieces and what the hell if they don't like it then you can keep it for yourself...LOL Family is always in my thoughts and I will be home for Christmas. Something tells me if I show up empty handed after a year abroad i will not be getting any kisses under the mistletoe. BIG shout out to my sister for holding down the fort in Houston since my Dad passed. I know that Mom is grateful for your presence as am I.

I spent the day at the Borghese Gallery this evening and it was spectacular. The opulence in this museum is extraordinary. There are so may different types of marble, statues, art on the walls, painted ceilings, frescoes and this was a persons residence? I think I can figure out how our tax dollars are being spent back home...maybe there should be a tour of some of those billionaires homes to raise money for the nations...at least the people would get a look at some of the opulence that our nations leaders are living in...way over the top. Unfortunately the Borghese gallery is a no photos exhibit but WOW it was amazing. There have been only a few locations so far on my trip that do not allow photos or you know that I would snap a few (hundred) and share. Today after the post office I went to Termini Station (train) to see if I would be able to navigate getting my train ticket to the airport on Sunday morning and I think I have it figured out. You know how I am with directions and this is only to get to the airport. Wait till I reach Florence and have to navigate across town on my own with backpack in tow...Yipee!!
The weather has been agreeable so far as today was another beautiful day to sit on the Spanish steps and then on a few choice park benches in and around town to sit and read a good book. I'm currently reading the Sistine Secrets about the Sistine Chapel. An interesting and timely read. I'm sure there are at least a thousand additional museums and cathedrals that i could poke my head into in the city but some days are just meant to people watch, eat, read, nap, people watch eat, read, nap....you get the picture and I get to do it in Rome Italy...Lucky Me! It may be getting to be sweater weather here soon as well. I guess I still look a little weird as I am still in shorts and t-shirts while some of the locals have on coats and scarfs but then I seem to also be moving a bit more quickly or at least covering alot more ground then they are. I always have been a bit warm blooded, hotter than the rest even if I do say so myself but I just like comfort over style and nothing spoils style faster than dripping perspiration. I don't sweat, I perspire...that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I have some observations from my wander of the city today. Alpha Romero's, Smart, Maserati, Vespa, Harley and a whole line of small cars that I never heard of rule the roads. Helmets are worn and no more that 2 people, no children are on the motorcycles...Hooray! Parking is at a premium so if you see a large car they will always be signaled up a drive and behind a gate where their is privileged parking spaces for the privileged No so for the ordinary man/woman who use every square inch of street parking hence parking the cycles/smarts vertical to the curb to allow more spaces. Sidewalks, alleys and driveways are not off limits to the parking creativity. Rome has a much slower pace than anywhere i have been to date. There is alot of walking arm in arm, chatting or debating or ....well everyone here seems to talk at the same time and only when they come up for air is there any silence and then only briefly while they catch their breath and start talking over the other and progressively get louder and louder and oh there go the hands that have to orchestrate what ever tit is that they are saying....look out duck this one is using both hand on a very narrow street and he may take you out with a nice upper cut to the jaw. Fascinating and fun to observe and participate. They love to shyly ask where you are from and then try to tell you a story in Italian about a friend/cousin/nephew/brother who has visited the American States and that it was so big and so fast paced. They were happy to come home to the family. Gotta love that they at least gave it a try...LOL
Enjoy!
